CBHS Students Build House
Edlene Williams was the recipient of an elderly transportable unit September 9 at Carvers Bay High School. The unit is a stick-built home built on a mobile-home chassis. "I'm just very proud I am able to be here today," Williams said. "First, I have to thank God and all the others who pushed so hard for me to get this house." The program to build the transportable units is a partnership of the Georgetown County School District, the United Methodist Relief Center, Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments and Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Fourteen Carvers Bay High students worked about three hours a day after school and during the summer on the unit, and were paid a stipend of $8, thanks to a Workforce Investment Act grant administered through the Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments. The students were supervised by teacher Terry Cox. Cox said "This is one of the biggest things to ever happen on the Carvers Bay campus." Student workers who attended the ceremony were Davanta Jackson, Tresvant Robinson and Aljuayan Vereen. GCSD Superintendent Dr. Randy Dozier said people often hear bad things about schools but "I always tell people there are a lot of good things happening at our schools. I can't compliment these students enough." Carvers Bay Principal Rich Neal said he was very proud of the work accomplished by his students and the supervision provided by Cox.
