McDonald Students Participate in Events
Several exciting events have taken place at McDonald Elementary School in the past two weeks, including Constitution Day, Spirit Day, Project Learning Tree’s Sewee Earth Stewards program, and an ESOL Parent Outreach Program. As part of being a Project Learning Tree Environmental School, fifth graders at McDonald Elementary participate in the Sewee Earth Stewards program which is a standards-based program. The young environmentalists journeyed to the Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center where they engaged in scientific explorations. Guided by Ms. Julie Binz, they tested water quality, used qualitative observations to observe the weather conditions and make predictions, caught organisms to classify into groups, used field guides to identify and research information about the organisms, and used binoculars to observe the natural environment up close and personal. Working in groups, they toured the exhibit hall where they discovered more about the Waccamaw River, the Pee Dee River and Sandy Island.
