DHEC Environmentalist Speaks at GMS
Jeannie Carter, DHEC presenter, recently spoke to the 7th grade science classes at Georgetown Middle School. The program was funded by S.C. DHEC and targeted environmental education curriculum. The title of the program "Action in the Classroom," helped students understand recycling, renewable and nonrenewable resources.
Carter brought many products that had been recycled for the students to investigate. Students were amazed by the pencils and rulers which were made from recycled jeans.
During the presentation, students played an interactive game called "My Bag" in which they identified and separated clean trash into categories of recycle, reuse, repair, compost, and landfill. Teachers received educational posters featuring the Recycle Guys and a booklet of lesson plans and activities that their classes or schools can choose as a project. Students were given pencils made from recycled materials of either denim or currency.
