Waccamaw Girls Win State Tennis Title
Waccamaw High's girls tennis team won the Class AA State Tennis Championship Nov. 7. The Lower State Champion Warriors won the title with a 4-3 victory against Upper State Champion Emerald High of Greenwood, in a match played in Sumter. The state championship is the fourth for Coach James Brown's girls team, which also won titles in 2004, 2005, and 2006. Waccamaw advanced to the state title match by beating Bishop England for the Lower State title. Players for the state champion Warriors are Tolley Rice, freshman; Sarah Elliott, freshman; Casey Altman, sophomore; Margaret Brown, freshman; Riley McCallus, senior; Sarah Moran, sophomore; Danielle Hartzler, junior; Crayton Wells, senior; and Stephanie Franza, senior. Brown, the state Coach of the Year this season, also has led the Waccamaw High boys to three state championships. Congratulations, Waccamaw High!
