Georgetown High NJROTC Inspection
On December 10 the Georgetown High NJROTC had its annual Area Manager's Inspection. The guest inspector this year was Captain Kent Flowers, USN. He is the Commanding Officer/Professor of Naval Science of Savannah State University in Savannah, Georgia. Captain Flowers conducted a Personnel Inspection early in the morning and then was the Reviewing Officer and speaker at the ceremonial phase of the program where he presented "Exemplary Appearance" ribbons to Freshmen Cadets who were particularly outstanding in the morning inspection. They were: Dillon Alford, Paola Garcia, Renee Goude, Shamiaha Holmes, Jerica Knox, Harrison McConnell, Andrea Roman, Ajai Smith, Abria Wright, Kianna Wright, and Olivia Shaw.
Captain Flowers in his remarks surprised three senior cadets by presenting four-year scholarship offers to the NROTC program at Savannah State University which would lead to their commissioning as Ensigns in the U.S. Navy upon graduation and a minimum of four years service in the Navy. These scholarship offers were made based on their academic GPA, class standing, SAT/ACT scores, and overall performance at GHS. They are conditional, if accepted, on the candidates being found physically qualified for commissioning. The scholarships cover all tuition and fees at Savannah State University, $750 a year for books, and a monthly stipend of $250 for freshman. The monthly allowance goes up $50 per month each year in college thereafter. The three cadets offered these scholarships were: C/LT Andrew Benge, C/LT Shanice Cumbee, and C/LT Dennis Nesbit.
After the ceremonial phase of the inspection was over Captain Flowers and Principal Dr. Mike Cafaro received an excellent Cadet Staff Briefing led by our Battalion Commander, C/CDR Mary Kay Nibert and he closed the day with a presentation to our seniors, juniors and some sophomores on the NROTC Program in general and Savannah State NROTC in particular.
