'Coach' Cafaro and Championship Teams Honored

In Georgetown County, Dr. Mike Cafaro is principal of Georgetown High School. But in Orrum, N.C., he is still remembered as Coach Cafaro who led the Orrum High 1984 and 1985 girls basketball teams to unbeaten and state championship seasons. Cafaro, the team, and community members met last month for a festive 25-year reunion. The 1984 team was 29-0 and the 1985 team was 30-0 and ranked 20th in the nation by USA Today. After the 1985 season the Associated Press named Cafaro North Carolina's Girls Coach of the Year for all classifications. Cafaro said there was a lot of reminiscing at the reunion and that it was the first time he had seen many of the players since their last championship season. "As an educator you hope that you can make a positive impact on your students," Cafaro said, noting it was rewarding to once again see former students he had helped become successful in school and in life.
