Miriam Daniels
Principal

Mrs.D
A Day In Her Life

What exactly does a principal do?

Mrs. Marshall's fourth grade class wanted to know. So they decided that they (with some technical help from Mr. Marshall) would document her "typical" day. This web page and the videos are the results of their efforts. Now you, too, can know exactly what a principal does!

How did we do it?

It’s a lot of hard work making a documentary! You have to have filming time. You have to have a cameraman. (That was Katie but she moved. So now Charles is our cameraman.) You also need a photographer (Brandon) to take pictures for this web page. You have to have someone like me (Nina) to take notes and stuff. You have to have lots of things. Doing a documentary is a lot of work. I’m not trying to say not to do a documentary. It is lots of fun! The documentary process is: brainstorm ideas, figure out how to prove what we think, get a crew, videotape, then put things in order. Then you write, sequence, edit, and then you’re done. So, I hope you enjoy our documentary!

Hypotheses
We started our project by making a list of all the things we thought Mrs. Daniels does. (Hypotheses)

Experimental Design

Then we came up with some ideas how we could show what Mrs. Daniels does. (Experimental Design)

Morning Show
This is the morning show shown on Mac T.V.  At 7:42 a.m. Mrs. Daniels comes on T.V.  Mrs. Daniels likes to talk on the T.V. at school. While Mrs. Daniels is talking everyone should be quiet.

Performance

This picture is Mrs. Daniels standing with the 2nd grade children on the morning show. The children were singing, and the whole class sang. At the time this picture was taken the verse the children sang was “Go to Bed Early, Stand Very Tall, Go to Bed Late, Stay Very Small”. It was very kind of Mrs. Daniels that when they sang, she sang with them and did the actions. I’m glad to be in a school where Mrs. Daniels is a principal and to receive her kindness.

Awards

Mrs. Daniels is on the morning show giving awards to the people who received the superintendent’s academic award. There are seven of us who got the award. She is saying it was hard getting all A ’s. She was happy for us. She gave us a pencil that said, “My principal is proud of me.”

Discipline

This is when Mrs. Daniels is talking to two boys in her office. The two boys were in her office because they were fighting. Mrs. Daniels is telling the boys to figure out a way to solve the problem. If they didn’t figure out a way, Mrs. Daniels would have solved it. The two boys wouldn’t have liked that.

MAP Conference

Mrs. Daniels is talking to a boy about his MAP scores. She wants him to read 30 minutes each day. She asked him if he had any books at home because if he does not, she will give him some. Mrs. Daniels wants him to improve on the MAP test.

Filming MAP Conference

Part of this project involved documenting what she does. We followed her around during parts of the day. We shot video, took pictures, and made notes. Then the whole class viewed the video and decided what parts to keep for the project.

Teacher Evaluation

Mrs. Daniels is observing the class and the teacher teaching her class. She is a pretty good checker.

Interview

Nina went to Mrs. Daniels' office and asked what she does during the day. Mrs. Daniels answered each question. Nina also asked about things Mrs. Daniels does after school. Mrs. Daniels let her know that her priority is her students at McDonald School.

Lunch

Mrs. Daniels often has lunch with the students.

In the Classroom

My principal Mrs. Daniels is in my classroom. She helped me and my class dig through owl pellets. Her job is to help people. She helped everyone on different bones. Mrs. Daniels was telling everyone, “Look at Jacob’s skull, it’s big”.

Conference

Nina takes notes for the project while Mrs. Daniels is in a conference with Mr. Kennedy, Dr. Leopold and Mr.Shaw.

  Open House

Mrs. Daniels is saying the Pledge of Allegiance with two boys at the beginning of Open House. That is how she always starts programs.

Leaving for the day

The end of the day - time to go home!

Advisor's addendum:

I asked two of the children to draw a picture of the image that came to them when they thought of Mrs. Daniels.

James' Drawing

For  James, her encouragement of his reading has played a very important part in his life.

Steffi's Drawing

For Steffi, thinking of her brings to mind a beautiful flower.

But, most of all, for those who know her...
