Certification for Out-of-State Teachers
The issuance of a South Carolina educator certification based on a comparable certificate issued by another entity's Department of Education is referred to as reciprocity.  Prior to beginning the application process, please review the Reciprocity Eligibility webpage for information on acceptable out-of-state certificates for reciprocity..

Online Bachelor’s Degree in Multi-Categorical Special Education (Horry Georgetown Technical College/Coastal Carolina University) Degree Program Partnership Starting in Fall 2022 -
In Fall 2022, Horry-Georgetown Technical College and Coastal Carolina University will partner together to offer a new fully online bachelor’s degree program in Multi-Categorical Special Education that provides initial South Carolina Department of Education licensure to teach. Through this partnership, full time employees (instructional and non-instructional staff, in and out of the classroom) from all school districts across the state are eligible.

Alternative Certification Programs:
Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE)

PACE offers qualified participants an opportunity to teach in a South Carolina public school while completing the requirements for professional licensure. Participants receive hands-on experience in the classroom and the support of experienced educators as they complete a series training seminars and courses.  Please click on the link below for more information regarding PACE.


Teachers of Tomorrow (ToT)

In 1984, to address critical teaching shortages in South Carolina, the South Carolina General Assembly provided for the establishment of alternative routes to certification in S.C. Code Ann. § 59-26-30(A)(8). During the 2017 legislative session, the General Assembly authorized Teachers of Tomorrow as a non-traditional or alternative route to certification for individuals with a least a bachelor’s degree but who have not completed a teacher preparation program.


American Board for Certification of Teaching Excellence (ABCTE)

ABCTE offers a series of examinations that lead to a license in secondary English, mathematics, or science areas. Individuals who pass these examination(s) can seek employment and work toward professional licensure. Please click on the link below regarding ABCTE:
