GCSD has New Faces at the District Office for 22-23

Georgetown County School District will have some new faces at the district office for the 2022-2023 school year.
District-Level Coaches

Ivy Palmer
Secondary Science Coach

Ivy Palmer has 19 years of teaching experience with the last 14 being at Georgetown High School. Prior to joining the teaching profession, she worked as a Research Analyst at General Engineering Laboratories in Charleston, SC. In addition, Palmer is currently an inservice teacher for the University of South Carolina’s Culturally Sustaining STEM Institute in Gullah Geechee Culture and Research and a teacher coach for the Center of Excellence for Education Preparation and innovation for Voorhees University.  Palmer has a B.S. in Biology from Clemson University and an M.Ed. in Math and Science Education from the College of Charleston. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from Coastal Carolina University.  

Mary Sawyer
Secondary Math Coach

Mary Sawyer comes to the district office from Greenville County.  In her sixteen years in education, Sawyer has worked at Blythewood High School, Westwood High School, Camden High School, and most recently at Greenville High School, teaching both in-person and virtual math classes.  Sawyer holds a dual certification in Secondary English, which she earned from Wayne State University, and math, which she earned from Madonna University. She has a M.Ed. in School Counseling from the University of West Alabama.

 

Lindsay Weirich
Secondary Social Studies Coach 

Lindsay Weirich has worked for GCSD since 2013 teaching social studies at Carvers Bay High School from 2013-2019 and at Waccamaw High School from 2019-2022.  In addition, Weirich is certified to teach Honors courses, AP US History, AP Psychology, and AP Human Geography. Weirich has a B.A. in History from Coastal Carolina University and an M.A. in Teaching with a concentration in Secondary Social Studies from Coastal Carolina University. She is currently working towards completing a Ph.D. in Education with a concentration in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. 

Lauren Prosser
Instructional Technology Coach

Lauren Prosser comes to the district office to fill the position of Instructional Technology Coach for elementary schools.  She has served as a sixth grade English Language Arts teacher at Georgetown Middle for the last 9 years. Prior to working at GMS, Prosser taught for one year at Marion Intermediate School. Prosser has a B.S. in Elementary Education with a concentration in English from Francis Marion University and an M.Ed. in Instructional Technology from Coastal Carolina University. In addition, she is certified in Online Teaching and Gifted and Talented.

 

Leona Bonds
Instructional Technology Coach

Leona Bonds comes to the district office to fill the position of Instructional Technology Coach for middle schools.  She has served as a science instructor at Georgetown High since 2006. Prior to working at GHS, Bonds taught science at Marlboro County High School. While at GHS, Bonds served as cheerleading coach, diversity celebration coordinator, and homecoming coordinator. Bonds has a B.S. in Biology from Claflin University and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix. She is currently pursuing an M.Ed. in secondary administration from The Citadel. 

ADEPT 

Kara Merritt
Teacher on Special Assignment (ADEPT Facilitator)

Kara Merritt comes to the ADEPT Department from Rosemary Middle School where she worked as a special education teacher. She has worked for GCSD for 23 years teaching students with special abilities from preschool through adults.  Merritt has a B.S. in Special Education from Lander University and an M.Ed. in Early Childhood Education from Coastal Carolina University.  In addition, she has certifications in special education, early childhood education, elementary education, and administration.

Urica Brown
Teacher on Special Assignment (ADEPT Facilitator)

Urica Brown comes to the ADEPT Department from Georgetown High School where she taught both chemistry and computer science. Brown also serves as the lead LowCountry PACE instructor for the South Carolina Department of Education. Brown has a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of South Carolina and an M.A. in Education - Teacher Leadership from the University of Phoenix. She is currently working on a Doctorate of Education in Educational Leadership - Instruction Technology from the University of Phoenix. The topic of her dissertation is virtual simulations and applications in a culturally responsive STEM environment.  

Breann Ethridge
Teacher on Special Assignment (ADEPT Facilitator)

Breann Ethridge comes to the ADEPT Department from Maryville Elementary where she has been a teacher for the last 15 years. In addition to teaching, she served as the grade level chair and as an Academic Team Coach.  Ethridge has a B.A. in Early Childhood, an M.Ed in Early Childhood/Literacy and an M.Ed in Educational Leadership from Coastal Carolina University.   

BUSINESS SERVICES 

Tameika Sumpter-Frazier
Director of Payroll and Benefits

Tameika Sumpter-Frazier comes to GCSD from Acuity Brands where she managed a portfolio in excess of $750 million while supervising a team of three employees and working with the accounting manager to establish bad debt reserve and provide accrual recommendations. She has a BBA from Coastal Carolina University and an MBA in Accounting from Strayer University.
