2022 GCSD graduates, Taylor Tilton (AHS) and Jary Grate (GHS) will be wearing “Cosmetology Completer Cords” as they walk across the stage at their upcoming graduations.  Tilton and Grate, under the supervision of GHS Cosmetology teacher Kyea Sturkin, have completed all requirements for a South Carolina Cosmetology license.

“I have a full license,” said Tilton. “I am walking out of school at 18 with a cosmetology license and can start work right away.”

Tilton and Grate both agreed that the process has not been easy.  “It was difficult, but worth it,” shared Grate. “I can take my license and use it to put myself in the field more. The program showed me everything about cosmetology, and now I can focus on and use what I enjoyed most.”

The Cosmetology Program is designed to prepare students to qualify and successfully complete all requirements for a South Carolina Cosmetology license. 1000 cosmetology hours and 540 academic hours along with a minimum of 8 units are required for course completion. Students receive training that follows the guidelines and regulations established by the South Carolina Labor, Licensing, and Regulation Cosmetology Board. The course of study includes Sanitation and Safety, Professionalism and Salon Management, Sciences of Cosmetology, Professional Hair Care Skills, Professional Nail Care Skills, Professional Skin Care Skills, and Unassigned Specific Needs. Instruction in chemistry, bacteriology, anatomy, and physiology of the face, head, arms, and hands is incorporated by means of theory and practical application.

“This is not an easy program. You have to be self-motivated, determined, and disciplined,” explained Sturkin. “You have to put your best foot forward and do what’s required everyday.”

Sturkin, who is completing her 16th year as the cosmetology teacher at Georgetown’s Career Center, is a Cosmetology Completer herself.  She took cosmetology in the same classroom as Tilton and Grate. “The ultimate focus is on what’s required for State Boards. I have to help students build the basic foundation in all components.”

Congratulations, Tilton and Grate!
