School History

The Georgetown County Board of Education planned the merger between Winyah and Howard High Schools for several years before the doors of the new Georgetown High School were opened for the first time.

At the beginning of the 1982-1983 school year, the athletic teams from both schools joined together on the fields and courts to become the Georgetown Bulldogs.

During 1983-1984, both Winyah and Howard’s names were officially changed to Georgetown High School on Winyah and Howard Campus. This was also the last year that the two former school names were seen on junior class rings and diplomas of the graduating classes.

As the construction of the new school was progressing during the 1984-1985 school year, the two student bodies were gradually being merged under the leadership of the new principal, Mr. Johnathan Moultrie. On April 20, 1985, the first GHS school prom took place at the National Guard Armory in Georgetown. The students also came together again on June 7, 1985, as the first graduating class of Georgetown High School.

Once the students were out of the buildings, the teachers from both campuses came together on June 15, 1985, to move into the new building on North Street (later renamed Anthuan Maybank Drive). The students entered the new Georgetown High School building on August 26, 1985 for their first day of school.
