Georgetown County School District recognizes that our recent state test scores highlight both areas of growth and areas that demand immediate attention. As a district, we are holding ourselves accountable and acting with urgency to ensure every student is on track for long-term success.
“Our state test scores show us that we have work to do. That is why GCSD is being intentional about building instructional leadership at every level — because stronger leadership means stronger teaching, and stronger teaching means higher achievement for our students. The 212° Initiative is one example of this commitment,” said Superintendent Dr. Bethany A. Giles.
The 212° Initiative stems from the question: Is there a connection between Grade 2 performance and college- and career-readiness indicators in Grade 12? The answer: yes. Second grade represents a pivotal year where students must make the critical transition from learning to read to reading to learn. When that foundation is strong, it carries forward through middle school, high school, and beyond.
Just as water transforms into steam at 212°F, small increases in effort and intentional focus can generate powerful, lasting change. The initiative positions Grade 2 as the “boiling point” where foundational literacy and math skills solidify, momentum begins, and students are set on the path from Grade 2 to Grade 12 — and beyond to being Enrolled, Enlisted, or Employed.
Key components of the 212° Initiative include:
High-Impact Literacy & Math Instruction to accelerate core skills.
Data-Driven Interventions that identify needs early and provide timely support.
Teacher Support & Professional Learning, with second-grade teachers receiving training, coaching, and collaborative planning time.
Family & Community Engagement, highlighted by Parent U for Grade Two, which will equip families to reinforce learning at home.
“212° is more than an academic initiative,” added Dr. Giles. “It’s an investment in our students, our schools, and our community. By focusing our energy where it matters most, we are turning potential into progress and creating the momentum our children need to succeed.”
