At Pleasant Hill Elementary STREAM Academy (PHESA), Project Based Learning (PBL) is at the heart of everything we do. Through real world, hands-on learning with an environmental focus, students are empowered to explore, create, and solve meaningful problems. Nowhere is this more evident than in our STREAM Lab and Makerspace—two vibrant, student centered environments where the journey of learning takes center stage.

The STREAM Lab is equipped with powerful tools including 3D printers, a Glowforge laser engraver, drones, robotics, Legos, and hydroponics systems. Students engage in PBL modules that challenge them to design, test, and refine innovative solutions. They learn that creativity, critical thinking, and perseverance are essential, and that the learning process is just as important as the final product. The Makerspace complements this work by providing a flexible, collaborative space where students build, invent, and problem solve using both everyday materials and advanced tools. It encourages experimentation, risk taking, and innovation as students think like engineers, artists, and changemakers.

Through PBL in these spaces, students are given voice and choice, allowing them to pursue projects that matter to them. Whether addressing environmental issues or designing community based solutions, students grow into confident, capable learners who understand that their ideas have power. PHESA is a STREAM School with an Environmental Focus, and our STREAM Lab and Makerspace are where that mission comes to life.
