The End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) is a statewide testing program in South Carolina. It measures how well students have learned the academic standards for specific “gateway” high school courses.
Key Points:
Purpose: EOCEP tests measure mastery of course standards, encourage achievement, and ensure consistent instruction across the state.
Grade Impact: Each EOCEP exam counts for 20% of the student’s final grade in that course.
Current Tested Courses:
Algebra 1 or Intermediate Algebra
Biology 1
English 2
U.S. History and the Constitution
Graduation Requirement:
To earn a South Carolina high school diploma, students must pass:
A science course with an EOCEP exam (currently Biology 1)
A U.S. history course with an EOCEP exam (currently U.S. History and the Constitution)
Who Takes the Tests:
All public school students, including those receiving special education services (IDEA) and Title I students, must take EOCEP tests in English, math, and science.
All EOCEP questions are based on the South Carolina Academic Standards for each subject.
