Each year Jostens recognizes schools that create engaging yearbooks that reflect a broad representation of the student body while helping students develop 21st century skills such as communication, collaboration, and information and communication technologies literacy. Three GCSD schools were recognized at the September 5 GCSD School Board Meeting for being recipients of Jostens’ 2023 National Yearbook Program of Excellence awards:
GOLD - Waccamaw Middle School, under the direction of Rebecca Adams; SILVER - Carvers Bay High School, under the direction of Jennifer Meyers; and SILVER - Waccamaw High School, under the direction of Stephanie Van Faussien.
Congratulations!

Today is International Literacy Day. Schools across the world are celebrating the importance of literacy. GCSD understands the importance of reading, and our schools joined in on the fun. From school-wide silent sustained reading, to guest readers, to “First Chapter Friday,” to writing “I believe literacy is” statements, students have explored the meaning of literacy and how essential literacy is to their lives.
Check out our school's Facebook pages for additional International Literacy Day pictures.

GCSD wants our students to fall in love with reading! Reading helps students grow their vocabulary and understanding about the world. It helps students build self-confidence, independence, and imagination. Every time a student is read to or reads a book independently, their knowledge grows and they become more aware of the world around them.
Join Superintendent Keith Price and Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bethany Giles in helping our students fall in love with reading. Each month, they will visit classrooms across the district and share their favorite books. Their first stop was McDonald Elementary … where will they read next?

In an abundance of caution due to expected inclement weather, all GCSD schools will have an eLearning day on Thursday, August 31, 2023. This means all schools and facilities will be closed on Thursday. In addition, all after-school activities for Wednesday, August 30 are canceled.
GCSD is an approved eLearning district, so Thursday, August 31 will not have to be made up, and asynchronous instruction will be provided to all students. Pre-K - 2nd grade students will receive paper packets, and 3rd - 12th grade students will be assigned lessons through Google Classroom. Specific instructions will be communicated to students and parents from their students’ teachers and schools. All assignments must be completed and turned in within three school days (Wednesday, September 7, 2023) in order for a student to be marked present for the eLearning day.
At this time, if conditions allow, athletic practices (not requiring bus transportation) may resume on Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. Athletic competitions scheduled for Thursday afternoon are canceled and/or postponed due to wind gusts that may exceed allowable speeds for bus operation. Student-athletes are encouraged to coordinate with their coaches for specific details.
GCSD district administration will continue to monitor conditions across our county. We expect a return to normal operations on Friday, September 1, 2023. Please check local media, the district website, and our social media page for the latest information on school closings or delays.
Visit the GCSD Technology Resource Center for more information on eLearning - https://sites.google.com/gcsd.k12.sc.us/gcsd-elearning/home?authuser=0

GCSD has a mid-day meeting with Georgetown County Emergency Management to review the latest reports on incoming inclement weather. We will release info about school operations following that meeting.

Have you heard? GCSD has a new communication platform which includes additional methods for sharing information with our families. Along with sharing information on our websites and sending emails, we now have the capabilities to send robo call, text messages, and push notifications. Which communication method(s) used will vary dependent upon the purpose and length of the information shared.

These days allow teachers an opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, purposefully plan instruction, finalize grades, and grow their professional skills to continue to provide high quality instruction for all students. All dates were included on the previously released 2023-2024 Modified School Year Calendar.
