AP Day at the Statehouse

By Dr. Malinda Mansfield

Andrews High School was honored to be one of only four high schools across South Carolina invited to participate in AP Day at the Statehouse in Columbia on Thursday, March 26.

This distinguished opportunity allowed students to celebrate the impact of Advanced Placement (AP) courses while representing both their school and Georgetown County School District on a statewide stage. Mr. Rowell, AP Human Geography teacher, and Dr. Mansfield, AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition teacher, accompanied eight current AP students and one former AP student to this meaningful event.

Throughout the day, students demonstrated exceptional poise and professionalism as they engaged with state leaders and policymakers. Among those they had the opportunity to meet was Ellen E. Weaver, along with members of the South Carolina Senate, including Ronnie W. Cromer, Tom Davis, and Greg Hembree.

Students and teachers were formally recognized in both the House and Senate chambers, highlighting the value of academic excellence and student voice. In addition to these recognitions, students participated in guided tours of the Statehouse, including the Governor’s Office, and explored areas of historical and structural significance, such as the building’s reinforced foundation.

One of the most impactful moments of the day was the opportunity for students to share their personal AP experiences with lawmakers. Their reflections underscored not only the academic rigor of AP coursework but also its role in preparing students for college, careers, and active civic engagement.

Georgetown County School District and Andrews High School are incredibly proud of these students and teachers for representing their school community with excellence. Their participation in AP Day serves as a testament to their dedication and the strong instructional programs in place across the district.
