8/14/24 Dear GMS 8th grade Parent/ Guardian, We are writing to let you know that your 8th grade student is currently enrolled in a high school credit course. These courses include Algebra 1 Honors, English 1 Honors, and Fundamentals of Computing. Upon successful completion of these courses, your student will have earned a high school credit. It is vitally important that you encourage your student to do well in these courses because it will be their first academic marks on their high school transcripts. These courses fall under the South Carolina high school credit attendance policy which states the following: SC ATTENDANCE LAWS MANDATE MINIMUM SEAT TIME REQUIREMENTS (120 HOURS PER CLASS) FOR CREDIT-BEARING COURSES. STUDENTS MAY ONLY MISS: • 10 DAYS IN A BLOCK SCHEDULE CLASS (90 DAYS) • 10 DAYS IN A YEAR-LONG CLASS (180 DAYS) • 5 DAYS IN A NINE WEEKS CLASS (45 DAYS) ABSENCES, WHETHER EXCUSED OR UNEXCUSED, COUNT TOWARD A LOSS OF SEAT TIME. EXCEPTIONS: FIELD TRIPS, COLLEGE VISITS (3 PER SEMESTER), & SCHOOL SPONSORED EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES. EXCESSIVE ABSENCES MAY RESULT IN CREDIT DENIAL AND MAY IMPACT A STUDENT'S PROMOTION OR RETENTION STATUS. STUDENTS CAN COMPLETE SEAT TIME RECOVERY TO MAKE UP REQUIRED HOURS AND ASSIGNMENTS.
